Dishoom’s South Bank Pop-up Cafe


The heatwave of the last week obviously has meant that the most ideal place for the monthly office drink would be a nice trip to the beach. Normally impossible in central London, we were delighted when Ravi discovered Dishoom Café’s beach Cafe. This pop-up venue outside the Queen Elizabeth Hall on the South Bank is inspired by Bombay’s Chowpatty beach, and comes complete with a sandy beach and terrace, all overlooking the river. The interior of the bar is quite fun and made entirely out of recycled objects from a wall created out of rolled up newspapers to multi-coloured barrels for seats and a bar made out of stacked plastic bottles. Last week, I discovered Nantwich – a small town home to approximately 13,000 people and the International Cheese Awards. The awards show has been going for 114 years and this year was held in a 70,000sq ft marquee, with nearly 4,000 entrants from over 24 countries.

The 50+ Show London

It seems that only the obvious firms (retirement homes and pension planners) get that this is a fabulously rich seam of commercial opportunity.   The queues to get in were long and fairly female but by no means exclusively so.  The few retail opportunities were humming – the man with bags on wheels could hardly keep up.  The man with the marginally hippy dresses and skirts was beginning to do well.  A few greyhounds might have found homes too – it was tempting. Top marks have to go to the  climbing wall – a relief to see something that recognises that 50+ is mere spring chicken territory.  The holiday chalets were a surprise but they all looked a bit the same, promising love and contentment.  SimpliCity computers have a good idea, just a pity it’s called SimpliCity.
